Proposed emissions regulations puts New Mexico's economy at risk
As a member of Jemez Mountains Electric Cooperative, Inc. we think it's important to inform you of two proposals being considered by the state Environmental Improvement Board (EIB) to institute a cap on greenhouse gas emissions in New Mexico.
Currently, the state Environmental Improvement Board is considering these two proposals that could devastate our economy. The New Energy Economy and The New Mexico Environment Department have proposed separate plans to cap greenhouse gas emissions. These proposals would impact thousands of businesses while doing very little to reduce global emissions.
These plans target New Mexico businesses only, putting our large and small business at risk. Your voice as an electric cooperative member needs to be heard.
No other state is considering such a cap, which would mean New Mexico would stand alone in having this significant cost driver introduced into its economy.
Higher prices for energy, goods and services would result from having to comply with the greenhouse gas cap. Having these costs applied only to New Mexico would make it hard for any business to justify choosing this state over others as a place locate and grow.
Federal policies that address greenhouse gas emissions are being debated in Congress, where electric co-ops are working with legislators to ensure the ENTIRE nation's economic, energy and environmental goals are balanced. We can achieve our environmental goals with federal legislation that has realistic time frames and targets for the development and deployment of technology to help meet the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while ensuring our energy is as clean and affordable as possible.
